An accomplished seaman and adventurer, he was the man Robert Peary chose
to accompany him to the north pole in the spring of 1909. He did not
get formal recognition until 1944 when Congress authorized a medal for all
the men in the expedition. The following year, he was honored with a
silver medal for outstanding service to the U.S. In 1988, Henson's
body was reburied in Arlington Cemetery beside Admiral Peary.
