EDMONIA LEWIS

Edmonia Lewis was the first African/ Native American female artist.  She also was the first woman of her race to be recognized as a sculptor.  In addition, she was the first woman to attend an American college on a non-segregated basis.  Art historians say her work "shows the will and strength of oppressed people struggling to be free."  As such, she was among the first to strike a blow for civil rights.
